Jonathan Wheeler was raised in Port Chester, New York.  As a child, he lived in Spain for three years and is fluent in Spanish.  Dr. Wheeler has resided in the Newport Beach area for over 19 years where he has raised four children.  He enjoys golf, music, hockey and sailing.  Dr. Wheeler has delivered over 5,000 babies in his career and cares for many high-risk pregnancies at Hoag Hospital.

Dr. Wheeler received his BA in Biology at the SUNY at Buffalo. He completed his medical degree at Cornell University Medical College in 1986.  His Obstetrics and Gynecology training was received at UCLA Medical Center in a combined internship and residency program.  There, he received honorary awards for his work in advanced laparoscopy and completed research in innovative surgical techniques.

Upon completion of residency, Dr. Wheeler has dedicated himself to private practice and advancing obstetric and gynecologic care. He first practiced in Thousand Oaks, California and then moved and continued practicing in Newport Beach, California in May of 1991. 

Dr. Wheeler is Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the Orange County Obstetrics and Gynecology Society and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Dr. Wheeler is a Certified Radiologic X-ray supervisor and operator.

In the past Dr. Wheeler has served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hoag Hospital and has served on numerous committees including education, surgery and advancement of Women’s Health Services.   He has been instrumental in the construction of the new east wing, the Sue and Bill Gross Women’s Pavilion at Hoag Hospital, and has been a supporter of the 552 Club for 19 years.

Dr. Wheeler has served on the Board of Directors of PCOC, a physician sponsored health insurance company in Newport Beach.  He serves as medical advisor for The Orange County Health Magazine.  Dr. Wheeler has lectured extensively in Southern California as well as across the United States on topics including “Maybe a Baby”,  “Pregnancy Over 35”, “Options to Hysterectomy”, “Postoperative Pain Management Using Anesthetic Delivery Systems”, “Essure®-permanent birth control” and numerous other lectures.  Dr. Wheeler has appeared on TV and has recently been recognized by LA Magazine and other Southern California publications for being awarded the “Top Doctors in Southern California” as elected by his peers.

Dr. Wheeler is committed to advancing techniques employed in the care of womens’ obstetric and gynecologic services.  By advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques (MIS), he has strived to reduce hospital stays, shorten postoperative recovery time and lower pain.  Minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) include robotic surgery, Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Hysteroscopic Myomectomy, Laparoscopic Myomectomy.  In conjunction with minimally invasive surgery he has strived to reduce postoperative recovery time and minimize pain by employing surgical pain pumps.
